Player Spotlight: Mizzy Mejia – Living Proof That the Game Gives Back
Meeting Mizzy Mejia on and off the court can feel like two different experiences. On the court, if you’re playing against him, you might not be his biggest fan—he’s vocal, relentless, and brings a fiery physical intensity every possession. But if you’re on his team, those same qualities that frustrate opponents are celebrated as passion, leadership, and loyalty. He’s the kind of teammate you want beside you, both in the heat of the game and in the challenges of life. Off the court, a few words immediately come to mind—family man, community activist, industry professional. But spend even five minutes with him and it becomes clear: Mizzy embodies the community he serves. His drive to see people thrive isn’t just a goal; it’s a personal obligation. His passion is contagious, and seeing him in action is a privilege.
While many in Vancouver know him best for his work in the music industry—playing a key role in some of the city’s biggest shows and festivals—basketball has always been one of Mizzy’s first loves. Growing up in Kenora, Ontario, sports and the game shaped his youth and gave him life lessons he still carries today. Two decades later, he feels a deep responsibility to share those lessons with others, especially young people navigating similar paths.
Mizzy has made it his mission to bring basketball opportunities to underrepresented communities, where gaps in youth programming often leave kids without access to the sport. He sees basketball not just as a game, but as a source of real-world tools—confidence, teamwork, discipline, resilience—that aren’t always taught elsewhere. If you respect the game, Mizzy believes, it can take you anywhere you need to go.

Mentorship and coaching have been part of his journey for years. Now, alongside Roundball Impact and the Indigenous streetwear brand Creators Kidz Company, Mizzy has helped launch The Game Saved My Life—an organization and apparel initiative designed to raise funds for youth programs, camps, tournaments, and community events. While resources and funding remain a challenge, the collaboration represents a powerful step forward in turning vision into impact.
Mizzy’s connection to Roundball runs deep. From playing in the league to witnessing firsthand the positive influence of its programs, he now sees partnership as the key to building something lasting. Through apparel sales, events, and community activations, the goal is to continue raising awareness and creating opportunities that outlive social media trends and instead strengthen community infrastructure for generations.
As Mizzy puts it:
“The work that we do starts here [points to heart] and then at the community level. All the stuff on the internet you can miss me with that, because is that gonna last 100 years from now? I don't know. But the foundational things that are being created in the community—the infrastructure, the resources—these are things getting passed down generation to generation. Those are the things, in my opinion, that are necessary to take our community as the hoops community to the next level.”
Mizzy is proof that when the game gives you life, the best way to honor it is by giving back.
